watch care & maintenance

Your responsibilities:

Wind your manual movement every day or before using and it will keep excellent time.

Please read all before winding if you are unfamiliar with a manual winding watch.

At least 24-30 full turns will keep your watch running a good 24+ hours. This is a manual swiss movement; just wearing your watch will not wind the movement.

a)  Unscrew counter clockwise the crown from the watch case. A few turns counterclockwise (4 or 5) until it 'pops' cleanly.
We do not recommend using pliers, wrench or any other mechanical device.  Your gentle touch will be sufficient. You will never miss another date or appointment, I promise. Unless, of course, you want to miss that date, then you can always say you lost track of the time but, please don't blame JBALDWIN Watch co.

b)  After hearing or feeling a 'pop' from the crown begin to wind clockwise.  Remember 24 to 30 times.

c)  Now set the time. Gently pull out the crown to another pop and set to correct time.  Easy Peasy! Right?!  Sounds a little complicated but it is not.  We will be posting a video very shortly to assist in the process.

d)  Gently reset the crown by pushing down and turning clockwise to tighten against the case. Again, 4-5-6 tuns should fully seal the watch.

It is important to push the crown fully in after setting time or date to seal the watch from water or humidity.

other important information regarding the care of your watch

The use of water resistant wristwatches in swimming pools, hot tubs and sauna can be harmful due to temperature changes. Soap, salt and chloride can also damage the surface of watches and jewelry.

I reccommend bringing your beautiful watch to a respected watch repair person once a year to be oiled (Jbaldwinwatch will cover the cost if from a qualified repairman and at a reasonible cost (up to $40 per year for the first two years.)

Mechanical watches are regulated by a simple hair spring that has a life of its own. The mood, temperature, position, and age of the hairspring affects the overall speed and reliability of your mechanical watch.

If your wristwatch is gradually becoming slow over years of use, then the watch might not necessarily be out of regulation, but rather requires a cleaning, we recommend our watches to be serviced every 4 - 5 years. If your watch either gradually slows down, or all of a sudden slows down as a result of a drop or precipitating incident, get it serviced.

If your wristwatch all of a sudden speeds up, then most likely the balance spring became magnetized.  Powerful magnets found in stereo speakers, laptops/tablets and mobile phones have been found to magnetize balance springs causing the coils to stick together, effectively shortening the balance spring and speeding up the watch.  Most watchmakers have demagnetizers and is a simple 10 minute repair that does not require removing the case back.

what to avoid

Stay clear of strong magnetic fields. You could magnetize your watch inadvertently and cause erratic gear behavior. The watch may also stop entirely!

If you can avoid it, do not wear your watch in extreme temperatures. Moving between excessive hot and cold temperatures can cause the parts to expand or contract, which may cause erratic rate behavior. Keeping your watch in extreme heat for too long can also cause your watch’s lubricant to congeal, causing friction on the gears.

Just because a watch is “scratch-resistant” does not mean it is “scratch-proof.” Avoid harmful objects that can scratch your watch, as well as dirt and chemicals that can cause damage slowly over time.

Schedule Maintenance Regularly.

Like any car, mechanical watches need regular cleanings and oil changes to continue running effectively. We recommend between 1-2 years mechanical watch maintenance.

Regular oil changes are necessary to prevent all of the parts from slowing and breaking. It is much easier to change the oil in a watch than repair or replace broken components.

water resistance guide

A watch marked with 50 meters on the dial or case back doesn't mean it can be used diving to a depth of 50 meters. The rating refers to the static pressure it can withstand. The pressure arises when it is moved under water when swimming, the pressure on the watch varies, and can cause seals to fail, and water to enter the watch.

For swimming and diving, there is a specific range of watches that are clearly marked as  200 - 1000M, which means they are rated for use underwater with additional durability and legibility criteria for use underwater in addition to the water resistance, these watches have a screw down crown.

When using the watch in and around water, do not pull out the crown to change the time, and if the watch has a screw down crown and pushers, ensure these are firmly closed before submerging the watch. Please note, that exposure to water may affect the life span of a leather strap, as such this should be avoided.
